Who We Are
The Children’s Academy was founded based on the demonstrated need for a school that provides an intensive speech and language-based curriculum in a small classroom setting specifically tailored to meet each child’s particular needs.
The Children’s Academy offers a rigorous, language-based curriculum based on New York State standards. Our small classroom size and low student-to-teacher ratio (6:2:1) provide a nurturing environment designed to help each student realize his or her fullest potential. An individualized instruction plan is developed for each child with strategies and goals designed to meet the child’s academic and social needs.
At The Children's Academy, a dedicated speech and language pathologist provides additional support in the classroom so that speech therapy is incorporated throughout the daily curriculum. Students may also receive speech therapy in a 1:1 setting, or in a small group setting, which are designed to elicit age-appropriate social language and interaction among peers.
We recognize that children with speech and language delays sometimes exhibit behavioral issues due to the frustration that arises from the difficulty in expressing oneself or understanding what is being said to them. The professional classroom staff at The Children's Academy is trained to address these common behavioral issues. Although New York City offers several excellent schools for children with learning delays, none other than The Children's Academy offers an intensive language-based curriculum combined with a proven methodology for handling associated behavioral issues in a small classroom environment.
The Children's Academy's integrated, multi-disciplinary program includes occupational therapy sessions to assist with both fine motor and gross motor development. Our highly trained occupational therapist staff incorporates portions of the curriculum into the occupational therapy sessions to reinforce core concepts. We also offer the opportunity for occupational therapy sessions in a large, sensory integration gym.
We provide a daily "open door" policy, where parents are invited to observe their child's classroom from an observation room equipped with a one-way mirror. Parents do not need to schedule planned visits, but rather are encouraged to observe their child any time during classroom hours.
